As someone who just went through my own "SMART PHONE BAD" arc last week, I realized it's not the smartphone that is bad. It is what we do on it, and really we all know said thing is social media! Switched to a tiny 3" phone (Unihertz Jelly Star), no social media (besides YT for music, tutorials, and lunch breaks), weeks worth of music stored locally, etc. I think we all really just want MP3/GPS/COMMS with a dash of browser, not these multimedia time suck machines we keep on us like weaponry.

I figure a new iPod would be designed to play local media files and stream music only. I think getting rid of scrolling apps will make your smartphone experience better. I'm literally watching this video on the Brave Browser app. I disabled the RUclips app on my phone. Moreover using social media requires discipline. I only really use it to shop for used guitar stuff and follow the local music community; also through my browser. Try playing your mp3 files if you still have them through a music app like Pulsar on Android. It's advertisment free and I listen to whole albums (the classic way) on the go. Changing the way you use your smartphone and using it less will make you happier. I'll admit RUclips is my guilty pleasure, I try to use it to learn more about making music or use it to play guitar with some backing jam tracks.

Another blight on media experience is ads. The constant serving of 40+ second unskippable ads is making me spend much less time on RUclips, which can’t be a bad thing

We have seen this many times before: P2P, big Data, Lo/no code, the cloud, etc. The IT industry is hype-addicted...or at least its backers are. Plus the lure of putting millions of workers out of a job is just too great.

Google has also become very censored. Look for anything controversial on Google and you’ll only get results supporting googles view. A similar issue occurs with a lot of AI, because when one views something as objectively wrong even if it isn’t, they will inevitably impart that bias onto something that’s meant to be unbiased. Everything is a chatbot and AI is in everything because investors don't have a clue about things they invest in, and tech companies have become adept at finding ways to exploit this ruthlessly to attract funding. All most investors know how to do is look at numbers and they see that "AI" was hugely interesting to many people when it was released - but they don't get that it is just a toy in its current form, most people used it as a toy, and it's not remotely good enough to be a serious, useful tool for anything. But it's about that time when investors are starting to demand results for the money they put in, so tech companies are shovelling AI into whatever they have. Also, re: the ad. I love the idea of scheduling time to reply to an email. If you are micromanaging your time in advance like this, yet have the freedom to create a schedule for yourself, you _need_ to take a long step back and ask yourself some questions about why you think you need this level of precise control over things.

I literally saw a commercial using AI Imagery yesterday and that's when i've crossed the line. Not gonna sacrifice my drawing, story writing and digital design over stupid artificial intelligence. It's so lazy.

I was hoping you make an AI like chat gpt understand complex physical models and make predictions about the physical interactions but I found its not even close to being smart enough for that. Not even chat gpt 4.. It just regurgitates whats its read from some science article not having the faintest idea what its talking about..😑

Well, I don't realistically expect that we will move away from media. Most likely phones will turn into a thing of the past, but not only because people start seeing them as uncool. More importantly I believe it will be because new tech just overpowers them. The whole thing with VR, AR, and then the full-dive VR that could be possible in the not so distant future (remember the first iPhone will be turning 17 in 3 days) will probably be pretty crazy. This should spark a real wide-spread conversation right now about how we want to go about the environment we build in AR. It is quite possible we end up being followed everywhere by an obnoxious 3d rendering of Ronald McDonald, telling us to go eat at McDonalds`.

i replaced my smartphone with a commonplace book, a calendar book, a dumbphone and a digital camera. i have a physical album for my favourite pictures, i read more, i placed a radio in my kitchen. sometimes ill watch youtube on my laptop or bring my smartphone for navigation while travelling. but that happens consciously and not more than is good or useful for me.

I hope this is true, because I'm getting sick and tired of having to use my phone to do every single task and having my eyes glued to the screen at least 65% of my days. It's getting old & expensive.

The bigger problem is that we need the AI to conform to our requirements, such as faithfully follow prompts , check it's own mistakes , reconfigure screens , swap icons for words , provide instructions where necessary, and explain what is the 'hold-up' which stymies a task. If I tell copilot to give me a list , I should get a full list. If I don't like an icon or it's size , I should never see that icon ever again on my own screen. The software designers are bullies forcing the users to conform rather than just do the interfacing , searching , arranging , and so forth. Get rid of the wool hat indoors , you don't wear hats inside .

What you say is correct. But basically, this is just the same cycle as with evererything new in tech. Once the level of sophistication hit a certain threshold, things will become invisible and intuitive again.

Back in the day, smartphones were a productivity tool to me, it was relatively safe and non-distracting, and I could put all my ideas on my notes and transfer files with ease. It really helped me release my creativity. Now this thing has become a handcuff that is constantly tracking you, leaking your information, finding every way to crunch down the last bit of your time for money, and making you feel unsafe to put anything on it. However, it has become such an inseparable part of modern life that hanging out without a smartphone is kind of impractical. It almost feels like I'm held ransom by this tech ecosystem, and it's really hard to fight back without a complete overhaul of my software stack and lifestyle.

This is such a fantastic lens to look at this issue through. Judging from past "tyrannies" (yes, I consider social media to be a tyranny), cultural shifts must occur at the most fundamental level. Not policy - or, not JUST policy - it has to be overthrown at the level of the individual. I worry, though, that the media platforms will leverage these maximized engagement levels against any cultural shifts that may emerge against them and their profitability... that the problem is in itself a very effective means against its own demise.

You don't mention tool use at all, tools like auto-gpt or local apps like boltAI. And how can you not mention voice for GPT? How is that like a command line? AI is popular because LLMs are very useful. The one thing you were right about is marketing as always has create a hype train that has pushed their popularity beyond the users that can use them effectively. Case in point: you thought you were believable enough to post a video on AI. You're the type of user that is funding the development for the rest of us.

I use Perplexity several times per day for things like: Why does my charger fall out of my iPhone, why does my MacBook overheat, how do to x in second life and on and on. Perplexity is at the dinner table every day. The chief advantage is, no Amazon ads at the start of every response, no links to paywalls and a single well, constructed answer instead of 100 links that mostly want to sell me something. By the way, I have M Sc computer science (AI) in 1969.
